Using the National Ecological Network (REN) as a basis for setting priorities in the management of railway embankments in Switzerland

Location: national, Switzerland

Objective: improve adequate management of rail road and road embankments which are privileged habitats for many species and dispersal corridors

Problems: high costs and safety considerations of ecological management of embankments

Solutions: joint research in practical solutions for embankment management by three federal offices concerned (transport, railways and environment)

Results: development of a project to develop optimum economic, safety and ecological solutions for railroad embankment management

Critical factors of success: integrating the concept of the REN to guide the research into practical solutions for embankment management

Key learning points: with some imagination, seemingly "useless" forgotten spaces can play a vital role in improving ecological connectivity

Actors: Federal Office of Transport, Swiss Railways and Federal Office for the Environment
