Using the REN as a basis for planning road networks

Location: Soleure, Switzerland

Objective: to reduce the impacts of new road construction on local hare population and migratory birds

Problems: no strong legal basis to impose such measures at the time

Solutions: legal adoption of the National Ecological Network would make it easier today to request compensation or mitigation measures from road construction

Results: development of a covered strectch of road to reduce the impacts and maintain sufficient connectivity in the landscape

Critical factors of success: discussions involving many stakeholders and perseverance of conservationists, in particular the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention

Key learning points: A legal enshrinement of the REN is a valuable tool for requesting mitigation efforts
